Fantastic Fest Horror Hit ‘Strange Darling’ Lands Wide Theatrical Release From New Bob Yari Venture

Director JT Mollner helmed the film produced and shot by Giovanni Ribisi.

“Strange Darling,” the acclaimed horror film from director JT Mollner, has landed a major U.S. distribution deal at veteran producer Bob Yari’s new company Magenta Light Studios.

Premiering at the genre event Fantastic Fest in 2023, the Miramax-produced thriller has been universally praised (it currently sits at 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with 14 reviews) for its inventive narrative structure and lead performances. Magenta Light has set an August 23 wide release.

“We are thrilled to be bringing nationwide theatrical audiences this unique and exceptional film with terrific performances by Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner. This second feature from talented writer-director JT Mollner is destined to become a cult classic that defies conventional storytelling,” Yari told Variety.

Fitzgerald (of “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “Reacher”) and Gallner (“Smile,” “Scream 6”) star in the cat-and-mouse thriller about a spontaneous hookup gone terribly wrong. Many reviews hint that the film works best with as little information as possible going in, which could make for an interesting marketing campaign.

Mollner made his feature directorial debut with 2016’s Sundance player “Outlaws and Angels,” starring Chad Michael Murray and Luke Wilson. Both of his films were shot on 35mm. He’s currently adapting the Steven King novel “The Long Walk” for Lionsgate, to be directed by Francis Lawrence (“The Hunger Games” series).

“Mollner shows himself to be more forward-thinking than most of his genre peers. He’s clearly a student of the game, one who studied his forebears’ lessons with adroitness to better prepare himself to put his own mark on them,” Variety wrote in a review out of Fantastic Fest.

The film is produced by Emmy and Screen Actors Guild award nominee Giovanni Ribisi, who also served as director of photography (his camera work in the film earned him a spot in Camerimage’s Cinematographers Debuts Competition). Former Miramax CEO Bill Block, Chris Ivan Cevic, Steven Schneider and Roy Lee (“Barbarian”) also served as producers.

Fitzgerald is represented by Paradigm, Untitled Entertainment, and Jackoway, Austen, Tyerman. Gallner is repped by Paradigm, manager Nils Larsen of Integral Artists and attorney Stewart Brookman. Mollner is with Nick Terry at World Builder Entertainment, UTA and Jackoway, Austen, Tyerman.

Wildcat: Ethan Hawke’s Flannery O’Connor Biopic Starring Maya Hawke Gets Release Date
Posted by Veronique on Feb 4, 2024

Wildcat — the new Flannery O’Connor biopic directed and co-written by Ethan Hawke starring his daughter, Maya Hawke — has scored a release date.

Per Deadline, Oscilloscope Laboratories has settled on a spring release date for Wildcat. The film will open in New York City and Los Angeles theaters on May 3, 2024, before it continues to expand nationwide in the following weeks.

Maya Hawke plays Flannery O’Connor in the movie, while Laura Linney, Philip Ettinger, Rafael Casal, Cooper Hoffman, Steve Zahn, Vincent D’Onofrio, Alessandro Nivola, Christine Dye, Willa Fitzgerald, and Levon Hawke also star.
What is Wildcat about?

Deadline’s synopsis for the film reads, “[Wildcat] invites the audience to weave in and out of the mind of celebrated Southern Gothic writer Flannery O’Connor (Maya Hawke) as she ponders the great questions of her writing: Can scandalous art still serve God? Does suffering precede all greatness? Can illness be a blessing?

In 1950, Flannery visits her mother Regina (Laura Linney) in Georgia when she is diagnosed with lupus at 24 years old. Struggling with the same disease that took her father’s life when she was a child and desperate to make her mark as a writer, this crisis pitches her imagination into a feverish exploration of belief. As she dives deeper into her craft, the lines between reality, imagination, and faith begin to blur, allowing Flannery to ultimately come to peace with her situation and heal a strained relationship with her mother.”

Ethan Hawke — whose past directorial projects include 2001’s Chelsea Walls, 2006’s The Hottest State, 2014’s Seymour: An Introduction, and 2018’s Blaze — wrote the screenplay with Shelby Gaines. He also produces the movie with Ryan Hawke, Joe Goodman, Cory Pyke, and Karri O-Reilly, while Maya Hawke, David Kingland, Eric Groth, Wojciech Frykowski, Gaines, Brian Tetsuro Ivie, Gregory Daniel King, and Ralph Winter serve as executive producers.

Wildcat releases in New York City and Los Angeles theaters on May 3, 2024, before it then begins going nationwide.
